Brian Bolger, Pat Brunnock, Cian O'Hara and Redmond O'Toole formed in 2001 the Dublin Guitar Quartet. They concentrate on contemporary repertoire, consisting of works by Brouwer and Koshkin and their own arrangements of string quartets by composers like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Henryk Gorecki and Arvo Part. Composers such as Derek Ball, John Mc Lachlan, Simon O'Connor and Kevin Volans wrote works for them.
The structure of the DGQ is unique in that both Bolger and O'Toole play eight-string Brahms guitars. This increases the available note range in both directions enabling the quartet to develop an entirely new repertoire for the guitar quartet medium. The DGQ has performed in masterclasses throughout Europe with internationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles such as the L.A. Guitar Quartet, Trio de Cologne, The Assad Brothers and Manuel Barrueco.
